South African President Jacob Zuma announced today that Nelson Mandela died in his home: “Our nation has lost its greatest son. Our people have lost a father. Although we knew that this day would come, nothing can diminish our sense of a profound and enduring loss.”
Arrested in 1962, Mr. Mandela spent 27 years in prison after being convicted of treason and eventually became a symbol of the anti-apartheid movement (Polgreen, 2013; Fox News, 2013).
“He inspired a generation of activists, left celebrities and world leaders star-struck, won the Nobel Peace Prize and raised millions for humanitarian causes” (Connor, 2013).
President Obama reacted by suggesting “He no longer belongs to us – he belongs to the ages” (ABC News, 2013).
The Clinton Foundation Press Release states: “History will remember Nelson Mandela as a champion for human dignity and freedom, for peace and reconciliation.” (Clinton Foundation, 2013).
