Digital Set to Surpass TV in Time Spent with US Media

The latest report on Internet media consumption versus TV places TV in peril by the end of this year. According to the report, online media consumption will be greater than TV for the first time.

The average adult will spend over 5 hours per day online, on nonvoice mobile activities or with other digital media this year, eMarketer estimates, compared to 4 hours and 31 minutes watching television. Daily TV time will actually be down slightly this year, while digital media consumption will be up 15.8%.

My first thought concerned those of us who use multiple devices. Right now on my desk is a Microsoft Surface Pro, an Apple iPad, and the iMac with two monitors hooked up. The iPhone is also sitting on the desk playing Pandora radio. The only reason the HP notebook is not on the desk is because it is in the living room.

According to the report, though, “eMarketer’s estimates of time spent with media include all time spent within each medium, regardless of multitasking.”

Hidden in the report is good news for tablet manufacturers, “eMarketer estimates tablet users spent nearly 2 hours per day with their devices in 2012.” The measured time is lowered if averaged across a population which does not own tablets.
