As with Dave Winer, all the cheering at Apple’s iPod event was a bit uncomfortable to listen to. I was surprised that all the press were roaring, whistling, and the like at each of Steve Job’s reveals. Then towards the end, when Jobs had those involved in the various products at Apple stand up, I realized what was going on: Much of the audience was from Apple itself. They were the ones whooping and hollering I bet. So next time I’ll realize these “press events” are more “rally” than anything else.
I noticed at a couple of the crowd shots that several people weren’t clapping and were looking around to see who was. Were these the press people? I hope they were. I hope they can stay objective. I don’t mind press getting into the moment, but it makes me wonder about their biases if they were to roar along with the crowd.
Anyway, it looked like many of the people up front as well as those scattered about were all Apple employees. Maybe someone who was at the event can add some context here. Was it more promoted and organized as a press event or a rally? Does it matter to you?
