Engadget points to this Android-based concept MID that leverages a Rockchip processor.
I won’t copy/paste the images and video to here, but check it out at Engadget. What’s so interesting about this functioning MID is how thin it is. There’s no word on the battery life or heat dissipation, but the graphics and touch features required of any good MID seem to be present.
In terms of the thickness, I think this MID design has it right. Some might argue that its 5″ form factor is too big or not big enough, but I don’t think that’s as critical as the thinness combined with the processing package. That’s the key.
Up to this point Apple has been the leader in thin designs like this, with the iPhone, however, with future processor systems like the Rockchip or eventually with whatever Intel comes out with, I think we’ll see lots more designs like this. In fact, I speculate that Intel will have the greatest influence here to the adoption of devices like this over the next decade or so. Intel has the market force and scale to enable this market segment. If Intel doesn’t do it, I don’t see it happening for awhile simply because the engineering efforts will be too steep of a curve for most small companies that might have a swing at the Apple table coattails.
