The last time I attempted a crossword puzzle was in the mid-1980s. I gave up without ever completing it. After purchasing the iPad, I started to search out puzzles for the iPad. NY Times has an application but the background music quickly became annoying. I closed it down after only a few minutes. Fortunately, the iPhone blog uploaded a video to YouTube of a fantastic application (see below).
As the above image shows, I found the perfect application. In fact, the image above is my first attempt of solving a crossword puzzle on the iPad with an application worthy of its name – Crosswords. The application is available for the iPad, iPod, or iPhone. It’s a $10 application.
The real joy to this application is the numerous sources of puzzles:
Included Puzzle Sources:
• Houston Chronicle/Washington Post
• New York Times Classic Crosswords
• The Onion A.V. Club Crossword
• Philadelphia Inquirer Sunday
• Sydney Morning Herald
• Thinks.com
• Wall Street Journal
• Village Voice
• Chronicle of Higher Education
• The Independent
• The Globe & Mail
• The Herald
• Manchester Evening News
• King Features Crosswords
• Guardian Crosswords
• Le Monde
• Easy Kentucky
• New York Times (subscription required)
• Telegraph UK Quick & Cryptic Crosswords (subscription required)
• People Magazine
• Newsday
But wait, there is more. Starting with version 2.0.2, and on the iPad, you can import crossword puzzles through the Safari browser.
So far, I’ve only kept to the minimum features. The application allows searching for clues, timing, and grabbing older puzzles. And as you can see from my work above, I have a long way to complete this one.
