WiFi-3G May 7, Second Generation Apple iPad, and OLED Screens

Updated: 4/19/2010, 5:40AM

According to Apple’s store, new orders for the Apple iPad WiFi-3G models are expected to ship around May 7th but that hasn’t stopped the rumor mill from discussing the second generation Apple iPad. For example, ChannelNews suggests a release may be before Christmas while DigiTimes floats the rumor that the iPad 2 will be have an OLED screen.

Apple reportedly has started development of the second generation iPad using the same design concept as for the iPhone 4G, and will use an OLED panel, according to sources in the component industry. Apple is said to be aiming to launch the device in 2011, but a Digitimes Research senior analyst said the cost of OLED panels are much too high for the iPad.

Organic Light-Emitting Diode (OLED) screens are much more expensive to manufacturer and expected to be on the Apple iPhone 4G. While several sites are dismissing this rumor, DigiTimes has a history of finding good information about secretive Apple.

In 2005, PC World stated, “Unlike LCDs, OLEDs emit their own light in the form of electroluminescence. As a result, OLED displays appear brighter and sharper than LCDs, even when viewed at an angle. And as a side benefit of ditching the LCD backlight, OLEDs are battery thrifty.

This same 2005 story discussed heavy investment in OLED technology. Despite this investment, costs remain high. I doubt we’ll see a second generation iPad by Christmas, especially when International Pre-orders are not until Monday May 10.
