A signature verification pen

I spent a good bit of time at the DynaSig booth (at the Arizona Technology Expo). They were showcasing their new Bio-Pen designed specifically for verifying signatures.

It’s a hefty pen that’s tethered to a USB port. What makes it intriguing is that the pen senses motion. The motion information–rather than x-y coordinates–is used in the signature verification process. By design and for security reasons, the motion data is not available in this implementation of the pen, but it got me thinking of the possibilities. Wouldn’t it be interesting to have Tablet pens with accelerometers in them? It might provide some interesting tilt, yaw and rotation data. I don’t know if there’s enough resolution, speed, or precision to do anything worthwhile with, but it’s worth a try.

Richard Kim, the president of DynaSig, was kind enough to walk through with me the ins and outs of what this would mean. He’s a veteran in signal processing techniques and isn’t too sure if it’s practical today, although he figures down the road it might be.
