Here’s an ArtRage sketch I did during some downtime today. I painted it over a snapshot taken while on Flagstaff’s San Francisco peaks this weekend. What’s funny is that the painting doesn’t look at all like the original, but oh well, it’s interesting as it is.
I used a relatively large brush to paint most of the surfaces. I think it was 44%. The only care I took was to drag the pen across the image in long, horizontal strokes because I thought it would look better that way. Also, I was somewhat careful where I started each stroke so that its color was about right. For instance, where I wanted blue for the sky I started in the blue area rather than in a white cloud.
The trees were painted differently. I reduced the brush width down to 1%. I started by drawing the tree trunks–although they are so small you can’t see them. Then I made short strokes for the branches and leaves. The trees didn’t come out quite right so I stopped after doing just a few.
I also experimented with adding some texture in the grass in the foreground, but nothing looked right so I undid it. I need to experiment more with ArtRage to find a set of techniques that work well. It’s definitely a fun program.
