Microsoft took a $900 million hit on the Surface RT. The press was relentless on hating the device; Spurred by nonsensical demands regarding Windows 8 and the “missing start button” sometimes the press is just wrong to suggest Microsoft messed up on the Surface RT.
The Surface RT is an awesome machine for high school students needing to write, take notes, and do research online. Nothing more from a device is needed. After all, the device comes pre-installed with touch-enhanced versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote.

Many consumers see the RT as a failed device because the press has stated it is failed. However, let’s go back to initial reviews and remember these words from Engadget, “If, however, you’re looking for an impeccably engineered tablet upon which you can do some serious work, a device that doesn’t look, feel or act like a toy, then you should get yourself a Surface with Windows RT.”
What changed? Nothing but perceptions. The RT was a device that did not look like a toy initially and it does not look like a toy today.
Nope – the $349 device is really the right device for high school students because it is NOT a toy. This is why I call the Surface RT a Surface Student Edition. Remember those words when you want to purchase a computer as a tool for your student. Do you want your teen playing or studying?
I regret seeing the early commercials on the RT. People were dancing. There was an atmosphere of the keyboard being vital – instead – Microsoft should have focused on the high school student. Get serious – and show students using the tablet for writing, reading, and research.
