Amber Alert: Unwanted Phone Text Messages

While working on the new Tux Reports Network server, my iPhone received an Amber Alert. This was the first time Southern Californians received an Amber Alert via text message. Personally it was startling but not annoying. In fact, I took the time last night to look up the details. Hopefully the children are okay.

The Los Angeles Times compiled some of the more angry responses to the text message. Most consider the Amber Alert to be intrusive. More important, the alert is on by default and a customer must change the phone settings.

Most newer phones are automatically set up to receive the alerts — which look like text messages but are free — meaning customers must contact their cell service provider to opt out of the program. Otherwise, customers will receive alerts tailored to geographic regions.

Will I remove the service? No. But you can on your own iPhone:  Settings->Notifications and swipe down to government alerts.
