Mary Ann Zehr reports that a recent study found the No Child Left Behind Act has significantly boosted mathematics achievement. The scientists found large increases in math for 4th graders and moderate ones in that subject for 8th graders. The gains in math were concentrated among white and Hispanic students, students eligible for free- or reduced-price lunches, and students at all levels of performance.
Although the idea is not popular with teachers, these results appear consistent with the principle that people respond to what is inspected, not necessarily to what is expected.
Kudos, teachers, for helping students to earn these math results.
