Numbers tell Apple they should be in the book business

Ben Lorica at O’Reilly Radar shares some interesting numbers on iPhone apps. You’ve got to check them out, particularly if you’re pondering the eBook market. Yes, the game market is #1, but look at who is coming up fast from behind: eBooks.

“Measured in terms of number of unique apps Books remains the fastest-growing category: during the week ending 4/12/2009, 11% of the apps in the U.S. store were in the Books category. Books has surpassed the Utilities category and may soon overtake the Entertainment category. Over the past week, Kindle for iPhone was the top app in the Books category.”

At one time Steve Jobs might have questioned the viability of the eBook market, but these numbers tell a story about a market that won’t give up.

Will Apple and team finally see the value of creating a device more reader friendly than the iPhone? I hope so.
