“When we want to know our emotional futures, it is difficult to believe that
a neighbour’s experience can provide greater insight than our own best
guess,” Professor D.T. Gilbert and his colleagues said.
When asked why people make this systematic error of not believing a neighbor’s avice, Gilbert said, “My best guess,” he told us, “is that we overestimate our uniqueness and thus don’t think that other people’s experiences can tell us much about our own.”

I wonder if people have to learn how to overestimate their uniqueness, and how this judgment pattern affects learning rates in schools?
