Silicon Alley has joined the chorus, requesting the Apple build a larger iPod Touch, making it a bonafide Tablet. As much as I like the idea, I’m beginning to have my doubts that Apple is going to follow this common sense thinking from the blogosphere. Maybe it’s a permutation of the “Not Invented Here” syndrome, but for whatever reason it doesn’t seem like Apple is going to do it. It’s such a natrual extension of what Apple has already created that it seems like it would have already launched one by now. It hasn’t.
I’d really like a larger iPod Touch for more comfortable reading. The current iPhone and iPod Touch displays are simply too small for my eyes for long term reading. Does Apple have too many engineers with perfect vision that they can’t see the obvious need for a product like this? Heh.
Until Apple sees the possibilities here, my hopes have turned to the forthcoming MID community. Hopefully, the MID manufacturers have been paying attention to the success of the iPhone/iPod Touch and see how to leverage from this. Hopefully. Something tells me though that I shouldn’t hold my breath.
One of the big challenges for the MID ecosystem is that it doesn’t have a good OS or shell for it. It’s not going to just be a matter of putting Linux on it. I’ve been wondering if Android is a possibility here. It may be too phone biased, but then again classic Linux is too desktop minded. Take your pick. Both need rework. Which one gets you to the finishing line faster? I think building up does. Am I wrong?
