I talked with a friend of mine today that runs what you’d probably call a mature startup over in the Bay Area. Our conversation was light, but of course, we had to chat about the general market conditions and where we see things going.
He sees a downturn like everyone else, although it reinforces his belief that one should be focused on creating value for customers and effectively communicating that value. Actually, he’s always been of this mind, so really this is nothing new, but it’s especially good advice in these times.
He also expressed his concern that there are too many companies that have loaded up with too many employees and sees rough waters ahead for these businesses as they downsize. Things have gotten bloated.
His approach going forward? Stay focused and keep investing. It’s interesting though, he’s not just dictating this to others. He’s back to coding again. That’s good to see. He’s one of the best developers I know.
I know there are many companies scattered around the world like this, all hunkering down for a long winter, huddled around their machines thinking, creating, coding, persuading. It’s good to see.
