Hurricane Sandy - Astoria, Queens in New York City
Hurricane Sandy – Astoria, Queens in New York City

There are many worried that electing a republican returns America into a nation of deniers. A nation against science, against women’s rights, against civil unions, against public school education, and against FEMA, NPR, and PBS.

There are many worried that electing Mitt Romney and the rest of the former Bush gang, the destruction of America will continue – as it did until 2008 – when the collapse was evident. Still no American felt the pain – and so the politicians were able to shift money from the middle class to the super wealthy.

The aftermath of the latest disaster on the East Coast should wake up voters. Will it? Most likely not. Too many members of the middle class, white males, vote against their own interests. It will take these stupid males to pull their heads out of the past and look toward the future.

The future is bleak. To stop the rise of the ocean tides now, we would need to join the UK and reduce greenhouse-gas emissions by 80%. We lack the understanding in these United States of America. We lack the understanding, therefore, we lack the will.

Regardless of who is elected in a few days – Sandy is the reminder – our nation’s coast line is headed for more trouble. It will not be until politicians lose their own homes before action in Washington D.C. actually considers appropriate measures to battle climate change. Don’t hold your breath.
