A landslide occurred at approximately 6 pm Friday in Banjarnegara district located on the main island Java after torrential rain swept through the area.
The natural disaster also left 17 dead, 11 people seriously injured, and four others suffered minor wounds, Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, spokesman of the national disaster management agency.
“The rescue operation is halted as the heavy rain might trigger a repeat of the landslide,” he said. There are 91 people still missing. “The challenge is that the evacuation route is also damaged by the landslide.”
Landslides triggered by heavy rains and floods are common in Indonesia during the rainy season. The Indonesian archipelago is vast and one of the most natural-disaster-prone nations on Earth. The area is also frequently hit by earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
