EXPERIMENTAL RESEARCH: (ER) a. Systematic observation for scientific purposes under conditions controlled by the experimenter as far as possible. b. Use of the scientific method to observe variation of a dependent variable and one or more independent variables. c. Testing a hypothesis to identify how much confidence to have in it.

Synonyms: EXPERIMENTAL RESEARCH emphasizes systematic controlled observation, analysis, and reporting. EXPERIMENT sometimes denotes innovation introduced as a trial or in a limited way in order to observe results before making a general introduction of the innovation. STATISTICAL EXPERIMENT assigns a calculated probability distribution of outcomes from an event. LABORATORY EXPERIMENT comprises the observation of a dependent variable, the manipulation of an independent variable, and control of other relevant factors. NATURAL EXPERIMENT refers to changes in a dependent variable after an uncontrolled change in one or more independent variables in a natural setting. TRIAL-AND-ERROR EXPERIMENT refers to a lack of rigor in a laboratory experiment in order to observe an independent variable.

Appointments included at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Peabody College and the Kennedy Center now of Vanderbilt University; and Brandeis University. Dr. Heiny also served as Director of the Montana Center on Disabilities.
