A Learners’ View (ALV) Is Of Choices On The Shortest And Fastest Path To Learning, The Oxygen Of Social Life.
Definition: (POC) 1. a A person, event, or other occurrence observed by a learner after which the learner changes one or more social patterns. b Something through which learning occurs; not a lesson when learning by the intended learner does not occur.
2. a A demonstration, lecture or other exercise designed for a learner to adopt, adapt, manage, or extend a social pattern to solve a problem. b Prompts from a person or situation for a learner to increase the likelihood of using a specific social pattern to solve a problem. c Prompts for a learner from an instructor that follow an identifiable lesson plan and an instruction plan.
3. (Tech.) a Social event that matches the ALV Path to learning; matches choices learners will likely make to solve a problem, that is, to adopt, adapt, manage, or extend a different social pattern. b Consists of the Triple-Helix of Learning.
Synonyms: DEMONSTRATION: Showing how something works, making relevant points tangible, or making what-works available in other ways to human senses. LECTURE: An organized oral presentation to prospective learners that usually features discussions about a specific topic vs. descriptions of observable behavior patterns for learners to use to solve a problem. LESSON: requires learning to occur from an exercise or other prompts vs. a collection of activities that do not necessarily result in all learners demonstrating observable changes in social patterns. A sensation that attracts learners to a choice likely to lead to solving a problem. TEACHING: emphasizes a presentation of something that results in learning and manages risks of failing to learn.
Antonyms: CONTEXT OF LESSON: Includes events and objects that do not measurably effect learning vs. elements of learning that do measurably effect learning. CONVENTIONAL CLASSROOM LESSON: A colloquialism that yields a Normal (Gaussian) distribution of learning, as if occurring randomly. FAILED LESSON: An event or other occurrence expected to result in learning that results in learners not altering what they do regardless of how skillfully it was presented, as in a successful operation, but the patient died on the table.
Highlight: Learning, problem solving, result from a lesson.
Comment: Learners have no assurance, beyond appearing someplace on a Normal (Gaussian) distribution, that any one or more conventional classroom “lessons” will allow any learner to learn it. At the same time, the reputation among learners, of other learners learning lessons of a particular teacher appears to increase the likelihood of future learners also learning lessons taught by that teacher.
