WHAT IS NECESSARY FOR PEOPLE TO SOLVE A NEW PROBLEM, THAT IS TO LEARN TO DO SOMETHING NEW?
FROM A LEARNERS’ VIEW (ALV) OF TEACHING AND LEARNING, the answer is, people make choices while learning. ALV represents a simple name for the minimum of what is common across more than a century of studies of learning reported by experimental behavioral and social scientists. They have described choices as a minimum number of parts, as in a puzzle, that go together to reveal a social structure of learning and its uses in society. This view is not a usual version of teaching-and-learning.
ALV describes learning as making choices that connect two dots. Learners choose how and when to identify dots and ways to connect them. Through choices, learners control their learning and other aspects of social life. We call this structure a learners’ view of learning.
In schools, when learning occurs, instruction matches choices of learners. Teachers manage their lessons in ways that influence the rate, amount of increase, and depth of learning, that is, the likelihood of learning occurring as expected for the lesson.
Teachers show learners how (which choices to make) to connect dots to learn teachers’ lessons. In this way, teachers can accelerate, increase, and deepen (AID) learning promptly and sometimes dramatically. This can save time and trial-and-errors for learners. Such efficiency allows teachers to show learners how to learn more lessons than if they have to recreate what someone else can show them how to do. Arguably, efficient learning leads to increased creativity of learners as their lessons clarify what the most accomplish people in society do.
