[edit] Q: Learners are individuals. They’re all different. How can anyone possibly say one view represents all learners except by using a biased guess?


A: Yes, individual differences exist. So do commonalities across learners. ALV addresses a sample of commonalities.

Behavioral scientists have used controlled experimental empirical procedures to observe choices learners make to solve problems. Learners in these studies ranged in age from children to adults with attribures that ranged from IQ scores in the 30s to gifted university students. Settings for these studies ranged from controlled laboratories to classrooms including in on-the-job training centers.

Other behavioral scientists have shown educators, trainers, and parents how to use findings from these studies in and out of schools with children and adults. Learners of those so trained increased their performance nine out of ten times. These applications increased the likelihood of learners meeting criteria for completing tasks successfully. [Tip]

Robert W. Heiny, Ph.D. is a retired professor, social scientist, and business partner with previous academic appointments as a public school classroom teacher, senior faculty, or senior research member, and administrator.
