IBM, Sony and Toshiba are set to release details on a new cell-based processor technology that they say could lead to “a new era of innovation in the semiconductor and computing industries.”
A Cell processor is a multicore 64-bit chip capable of massive floating point processing geared towared broadband and heavy media applications. Hopes are to reach 16 teraflops per second.
I wonder if this is a cross between a general processor and a GPU? Or is the idea to make the core elements of the GPU king? Should be interesting to find out.
I hope there’s some consideration here in terms of consuming power. Any great design today has to be power friendly. Too many devices, such as Tablets and handheld games, are going to be running on batteries or are so tightly packaged that a design can’t have too much heat build up.
