A responsive theme is not always perfect on the Apple iPad, and this site is no exception. This site has been using the responsive theme by CyberChimps. Unfortunately the javascript flaws were getting annoying. Also, the lack of good SEO built into the theme makes it even more challenging.
Yesterday I began replacing the site with a child theme built on Genesis. I’ve used the Genesis framework many times but was frustrated with the lack of a responsive theme. The 2.0 release now includes this much appreciated feature.
The All in One SEO plugin has now been disabled. This child theme now handles the necessary SEO. Actually, I’m not much of an SEO person – it’s either there or not. Google controls the algorithm and anything I do is just temporary. Anyway – the plugin is gone – for now.
Adding the top menu was a pain because I was using an mu-plugin to have the same top menu across all of the sites. This new child theme required a hook which is not recognized by the mu-plugin. Drats.
The primary menu is also not quite right. Seeing the iPad push into a second line is bothersome. The site really needs better iPad optimization. In fact, this is the goal of version 3; that is, to make the site optimized for mobile devices. In particular, I use the Apple iPad and Microsoft Surface (RT and Pro) and want this site to reflect this in the theme.
The tag line has also been changed. My mom, dad, and I sat in the living room for several hours kicking around different tag lines. I have several pages of notes. We focused most of the attention in defining the problem – the echo chamber. Hopefully we can move this site away from a “me-too” site and into the forefront of the new internet.
Please let me know if you see something completely out of whack. I’ll try to fix it as soon as possible.
Thank you for stopping into our little corner of the web.
The echo chamber is loud but not just because of corporations. The number of sites simply republishing press releases is growing.
Yes. A goal is to add more references and perspectives to a topic. This takes longer but may be worth the effort.
